What is the selection process for films selected to participate in the Texas High School Shorts program?

Applications will be reviewed and vetted for selection by the SXSW EDU team, who will select a lineup of short films to be screened. Submissions are evaluated on many factors, but selections are largely based on the following criteria:

  • Technical Aspects: Is the short film of outstanding craftsmanship, and does it demonstrate a level of competence in all elements of the filmmaking process, including but not limited to cinematography, sound, and shot composition?
  • Creativity: Is this short film original in its storytelling and characters?
  • Coherence: Does this short film show an understanding of pacing and continuity?
  • Message and Theme: Does the short film clearly communicate an idea or give the audience any takeaways after viewing? Will this film resonate with a larger audience?
  • Dialogue: Does this film have compelling character and/or narrator communication that translates well on screen?
