These are the VR/AR/MR project eligibility requirements for SXSW:
Eligible: If your VR/AR/MR project HAS NOT been exhibited in Austin, Texas, you are eligible to submit to SXSW.
Ineligible: If your VR/AR/MR project has been publicly exhibited in Austin, Texas at another event or festival (i.e Austin Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, etc) it is INELIGIBLE and you should not complete the Virtual Cinema application.
These are the premiere status definitions recognized by SXSW:
World Premiere: Your VR/AR/MR project has never been exhibited publicly at any festival, in theaters, broadcast on television or online.
North American Premiere: Your VR/AR/MR project may have screened internationally, but has never been shown in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, in a theater setting and is not available on any online platform.
U.S. Premiere: Your VR/AR/MR project may have exhibited internationally but has never been shown in the U.S., in a theater setting and is not available on any online platform.
Not a Premiere: Your VR/AR/MR project may have exhibited publicly at any festival outside of Austin, been made available to a general public audience in a theater setting or is available on an online platform.
While premiere status is a factor in our final decision-making, we don't place tough restrictions on the premiere status of Virtual Cinema projects. In 2017 around half of our Virtual Cinema projects were world premieres, but we exhibited a number of projects that had appeared at other festivals outside of Austin, Texas. If we really connect to and love a project and it hasn't received a huge amount of attention, we will try to share it with our audience.
